Stu Thompson
Fifty years in insurance, thirty focused on workers' compensation, and twenty-four leading one of the country's most successful self-insured groups.
Stu retired as the CEO of The Builders Group effective January of 2026. He became the Administrator of The Builders Group, a Minnesota SIG, in 2002. Then it was at $5.6 million in annual premiums and no investment portfolio. In 2026 when he retired, TBG was at $46 million in annual premiums and had a $77 million portfolio.
Stu has been in the insurance industry for 50 years and has concentrated on workers' compensation for the last 30 years. Over more than two decades leading TBG he encountered the full range of challenges that come with operating a SIG: board relationships, regulatory concerns, underwriting and claims decisions, investments, safety, service providers, leadership development, and succession.
He graduated from Hamline University in 1975 with a BA degree in Economics and received an MBA from the College of St. Thomas in 1983.
